One Vanderbilt, set to be one of the tallest buildings in the city, faced some opposition at a Department of City Planning hearing yesterday. The 67-story tower, developed by SL Green and designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, is set to rise just west of Grand Central, but the station's lawyers threatened a $1 billion lawsuit over unused air rights, "an unconstitutional taking of our client's property." Meanwhile, the rest of the hearing went rather well, with groups that had previously been against rezoning Midtown East to allow for taller towers coming out in support of the plan: namely, the Municipal Art Society, the Straphangers transit group, and Community Board 5, among others.
