Nonprofit's New Soho HQ Will Be Uglier Than Condo Neighbor

New, 11 comments

Two inextricably intertwined buildings are rising on Sixth Avenue in Soho: the soon-to-be-enlarged God's Love We Deliver headquarters, and the schmancy 14-story condo building One Vandam that it helped spawn. A refresher on the travails of this block between Spring and Vandam? Why sure. The nonprofit needed funds, so it sold $4 million in air rights to developers who wanted to build condos on a parcel just to its south. Neighbors weren't happy, but maybe instead of worrying about One Vandam, which is coming along, construction-wise, and promises to look decently okay, they should have worried about the God's Love We Deliver expansion, which looks pretty ugly based on the rendering above, first published by relentless new development watchdog New York YIMBY. But it's too late.

YIMBY reports on the progress of the new "utilitarian" (my, that's generous) God's Love We Deliver building, designed by Gerner Kronick + Valcarcel. Formerly two floors, it will eventually be six.

Meanwhile, BKSK-designed One Vandam is close to topping out, according to YIMBY. And that bizarre horizontal row of materials on the lower half of facade isn't actually what the facade will look like, Tribeca Citizen reassures. It's just what the limestone and glass pieces of the eventual facade will be hung in front of.
