Giant new towers that boast eco features are able to conserve so much energy because they come equipped with their own energy-generating systems, but the savings are negated by Con Ed, which controls the city's grid and charges these buildings a "standby tariff." At One Bryant Park, the Durst Organization was hit with a $2.7M charge. This could be a very expensive problem for Hudson Yards, where Related plans to construct a $100M super efficient private microgrid with natural-gas-fired generators. The tariff could mean millions of dollars in bills each year. [Crain's; previously]
