The Sultan of Brunei, a sovereign state on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, is reportedly close to paying $2.2 billion for the Plaza hotel from the Sahara Group (they've got a little problem with, uh, being incarcerated), but human rights groups are speaking out. Evidently, the sultan recently implemented some laws that could allow him to "start executing women and LGBT people in Brunei as soon as next year," and human rights groups say that someone that barbaric should not own a NYC landmark.
