After years of delays and setbacks, the George Washington Bridge Bus Station will be closed today for one year to make way for a $183 million renovation, the Times reports. In the meantime, buses will continue to arrive and depart from the station, and a temporary trailer has been put up next door to serve as a waiting room and a place to get tickets.
The renovation has been planned since 2008, but the Port Authority didn't start pursuing it in earnest until 2011 when a developer and a completion date of summer, 2013 were announced. That, obviously, didn't end up happening. The renovation will include 120,000 square feet of retail space, called the Mercado, with companies like Marshalls and Blink Fitness having already signed leases back in 2011.
