The long-stalled steel skeleton at 55 Eckford Street has been a blight on Greenpoint for years, but it's not really going to look any better when it's complete. A tipster sent photos of the rendering that's posted on the construction fence, and it shows a terrible black and grey slab with tiny slits for windows. The tipster notes that the rendering has been up for about six months, but there is "no work noticeable." Maybe someday the 10-story building will materialize with the 27 planned apartments.
On the plus side, the Department of Buildings database shows that there is no active Stop Work Order on the site, which means that something might be happening. The most recent violation dates from July of this year, when the owner was fined a whopping $2,430 for not complying with sidewalk shed codes because the shed was "damaged/hit by a vehicle." In March, the owner was fined a whopping $10,000, also for sidewalk shed violations, because all of the lights were off and it was "dark and unsafe for public."
The most recent building permit that was updated dates August 29; the permit was originally approved more than a decade ago in March 2004.
