The placement of a temporary dog run in Van Cortlandt Park — right next to a memorial for the Native Americans who fought with the states during the Revolutionary War — has drawn criticism, with some calling it disrespectful and insulting. Meanwhile, dog owners are doing mental gymnastics to try and negate that argument. "The Native Americans were fighting for the establishment of a democracy, and that's precisely how the dog run came to be," said one, a grad student. And then there's this guy, a carpet store owner: "I have nothing against history, but it's hundreds of years ago. It's time to move on." Guess that settles it. [NYT]
