Hoarder of History

Photographer and researcher Adam Woodward's Nolita home is chock-full of ephemera from the Bowery of yore. His particular passion is artifacts from the 1830s up until the Civil War. which he stores in his basement. He finagles access to 19th-century buildings "ahead of the wrecking crews, photographing and salvaging what he finds inside the walls, attics and subbasements of factories, taverns, storefronts and tenements, many long ago abandoned." In the process, he discovers things like, oh, centuries-old saloons. His nickname? The Shadow. [NYT; previously]
