Developer Wants To Fill Bed-Stuy With Fancy-Schmancy Stuff

New, 5 comments

Developer Bawabeh Brothers has a plan. It's to turn a stretch of Fulton Street in Bed-Stuy, near the Nostrand Avenue A/C stop, into a little enclave of upscale eateries and retailers. Wait what? In a brochure full of brokerbabble that is nothing but aspirational, six addresses from 1347 to 1361 are "re-imagined" and "re-envisioned" as sleek storefronts. What is this, the Meatpacking District? The existing small businesses on the block—a dry cleaner, a nail salon, beauty store, a sneaker shop and a T-shirt vendor—are probably getting booted, though they've heard nothing from their landlord directly. Needless to say, they're not happy about it. "It's not Fifth Avenue," said one longtime jeweler, who will likely be displaced. "It's Brooklyn. It's Bed-Stuy. It's the hood."
