Strange Rental Building to Border Bed-Stuy Historic District

New, 15 comments

The Bedford Stuyvesant/Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District (pdf) is characterized by rows of stately brownstones, but a block north of its border, a building is in development that is decidedly... well, whatever this is. On one hand, the 35-unit, Vasco Ventures-developed building is certainly trying for something beyond Value-Engineered Box of Apartments. On the other hand, this may not be the ideal location for it. On the third hand, why does it look so evil? Are those birds circling overhead really necessary?

The design has already inspired a healthy debate over on Brownstoner, with comments ranging from, "Brooklyn is not a museum, but it is a place with a distinct character that many of the people who live here have worked very hard to preserve," to, "so fucking what." No new permits have been filed yet.
