Hart Island, a 130-acre small patch of land in the Long Island Sound that is used as a burial ground, is one step closer to becoming a public park. The Bronx community board 10 gave its stamp of approval to a proposed law that would transfer the land from the Department of Corrections to the Parks Department, making it easier for families to visit the gravesites. The campaign has gained traction in recent months, and a new website launched to help identify the 62,200 people buried in the mass graves. [NYDN; previously]
