The future of the Queens Library at Hunters Point hit a roadblock last year when Steven Holl's bold designs ran millions over budget; however, LIC Post is now reporting that the much-anticipated library could break ground as early as spring. In order to reduce costs, officials said they had to cut some of the design's more" elaborate features," such as the proposed aluminum exterior, some interior fixtures, and the building's much-touted geothermal well system, which helped reduce costs by about $5 million. Nevertheless, Mark Christie, president of the Friends of Hunters Point Library, says that the end result will be "the crown jewel of the Queens Library system." [LIC Post; previously]
