New, 5 comments

Welcome to It Happened One Weekend, our weekly roundup of The New York Times real estate section...

2) Every "The Hunt" column begins with the Hunters describing the apartment they want, and ends with them rationalizing whatever they came away with. This is The Hunt: Dreams vs. Reality
The Hunter: a couple looking to rent
Price
Dream: $3,500/month
Reality: $3,810/month
Neighborhood
Dream: Midtown
Reality: Midtown West
Amenities
Dream: High-rise, building staff
Reality: 1BR, High-rise, building staff, basketball court
Summary
This week's Hunters started out looking at a one-bedroom rental in a walk-up in the West Village, but soon realized they were more interested in a contemporary high-rise with lots of amenities. Naturally, they started looking at buildings managed by Related Companies. They bounced around several properties in Midtown, eventually coming across a one-bedroom in the Westport building in the West 50s, which had everything they needed plus a good pet policy. The rent is $3,810/month, and the building has plenty of people on staff and a basketball court. [The Hunt/A Midtown Apartment Offers a Change of Pace; photo via Related Companies]
