Gentrification Watch

New, 1 comment

The ownership of Streit's Matzo Factory spoke out about its move to the sell its Rivington Street plant after a century in operation. "The decision to leave the Lower East Side was emotionally the most difficult decision our family has made in our entire lifetimes," the company posted on Facebook. "Doing business in the confines of the Lower East Side has many challenges that simply made it difficult for us to remain competitive with cheap overseas labor and large modern corporate entities." So it's not about "the pressure of gentrification," but... isn't it? Jersey is all the luckier to get you, Streit's. [Bowery Boogie/NYT; previously]
