A week after Airbnb released data on its hosts that showed more than half its listing could be illegal, journalists are uncovering more alarming findings from the Airbnb numbers. The Verge did an analysis of the data and found that a small fraction of the hosts who have more than one listing on the rental services website make significantly higher than Airbnb's median host income of $5,110.
The Airbnb data was released by the company after complaints from officials particularly the Attorney General's office that hosts were running their apartments like hotels, making large profits, and increasing overall rent for residents in the city. The information released by the company was meant to counteract this claim by showing that a lot of hosts made up for basic living costs by renting out their places.
However that's not always the case. Fast Company broke down some numbers from the data and found that about 90 percent of the hosts renting an entire home had only one listing, six percent had two, and four percent had three or more.
This third small fraction of hosts rented out a total of 3,541 homes between November 2014 and November 2015, and made about 24 percent of all hosts' revenue in the city.
Huffington Post had even more numbers. Their analysis revealed that about 10,000 hosts were making between $10,001 and $50,000 a year, and about 127 hosts were making between $127,000 and $350,000 a year by renting out their entire homes.
The only positive takeaway is that data examined revealed information from the previous year and it seems that the most current data reveals Airbnb is clamping down on illegal practices which would reduce the skewed numbers next year, according to the Verge.
