The Bancroft Building Is Really Coming Down Right This Second

New, 15 comments

It's been a long road to demolition for the historic Bancroft Building. The 19th-century office building with distinctive red-and-white detailing on East 29th Street lost its preservation battle, and it's currently being razed very slowly. Work started on the inside during the summer of 2014, and a video uploaded earlier this month shows that it's finally the facade's turn to go. Then a tipster sent in photos of the building shot yesterday, so it's official: chunks of the building's front are gone. History buffs may go ahead and weep—because HFZ Capital is very likely to erect something tall and glassy there.
