Urban Ecologist Wants to Build a Forest in Times Square

New, 3 comments

Urban ecologist/botanist Marielle Anzelone has started a $25,000 Kickstarter campaign to grow a forest in Times Square. Titled PopUP Forest: Times Square, the project would, if everything went according to plan, take over the popular tourist destination/nightmare hellscape for three months starting in June of 2016 with shipping containers filled with trees, flowers, and soil, and speakers playing wildlife sounds. Assuming the Kickstarter meets it's goal (and after one day it's already more than 20 percent of the way there), the project actually coming to fruition depends on how a prototype in Brooklyn goes, and, eventually, approval from the Times Square Alliance.
