Another piece of the Bowery is well on its way to a shiny, cleaned-up future. The long-vacant site at 185 Boweryacross the street from the beloved, mysterious, and no-longer-graffiti-covered 190 Bowerywill soon be home to a 19-story CitizenM Hotel, and Bowery Boogie shared the first rendering of the development, which was posted on the site's construction fence. The 300-room building will break the street wall to create a landscaped plaza out front, and the facade will be dominated by large square windows. Half of the building will be set further back, and two materials will be used for the facade, giving the illusion that it's actually two separate structures. It will be topped by a rooftop terrace and lounge.
Plans for a hotel at the site have been in the works since 2008, when developer Brack Capital started buying up the properties, and CitizenM, the Dutch hotel brand, has been attached to the project since 2011. The old buildings started coming down in 2012, and plans were finally filed with the Department of Buildings last year. Work is now in full swing, and a winter 2016 opening is anticipated.
