These Houses Once Belonged to a Prominent NYC Family

Shown here in the mid-20th century, this pair of houses belonged to a member of one of New York City's most famous families. They were photographed not long before their owner died, which was not long before they were demolished. Today, unsurprisingly, the houses have been replaced by larger and less attractive buildings. Who owned them and where were they located?
