New York City's Modular Micro Unit Building Starts Rising

New, 21 comments

The first of 66 prefabricated modules were hoisted into place today at 335 East 27th Street, where a city-backed building of micro units is taking shape. Constructed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the modules will make up 55 studio apartments, ranging in size from 260 to 360 square feet. Stacking of the modules will continue through the beginning of June, and the building in on track to be complete by late fall.

Twenty-two of the units will be set aside as affordable for formerly homeless Veterans and low-and middle-income families, while the rest will be market rate, renting for about $2,000 to $3,000 a month. Each unit is its own mod, and they feature Juliet balconies, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, a closet, overhead storage, and a kitchenette with two electric burners, an under-counter refrigerator, and an 18-inch dishwasher. nARCHITECTS designed the building, and Monadnock Development is developing.
