Though little new information has surfaced since the new building permits were filed last year, it appears that owners of the landmarked Steinway Mansion in Astoria, Queens are moving ahead with some sort of plan that involves the developing the (un-landmarked) land around the mansion. Last August, plans were filed for 11 small manufacturing buildings (the area is zoned as a light manufacturing district) and recently neighbors noticed that some of the trees that surround the mansion have been cut down. The community board and local representatives are also in the dark as to what the owners specifically have planned. "There are things happening there," City Councilman Costa Constantinides told the Queens Chronicle. "There are things that government can't control."
