Finally, it's almost here. The iconic, landmarked MetLife clocktower at the southeast corner of Madisn Square Park is about to be reborn as a high-end hotelas soon as next week. MadSqPark news first reported the Monday, May 11 opening date for the New York Edition Hotel, one of Marriott's ritzier brands masterminded by hotelier Ian Schrager. The hotel's website is now live, and the 273 rooms on offer range from $500 to $1,200 per night.
It's New York's first Edition hotel; there are outposts in London, Istanbul, and Miami, with plans for others in the years to come, including in Times Square. Here's what the hotel's teaser site, well, teases:
Centrally located on 24th Street and Madison Avenue, The New York EDITION sits directly across from New York's iconic Madison Square Park. Originally built in 1909 as the headquarters for The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the historic 41-story clock tower is an iconic New York landmark. The New York EDITION will feature 273 guest rooms and suites with spectacular views of the city as well as a 2,900 square foot restaurant, located on the landmarked second floor and outfitted with mahogany wood paneled walls and specially curated art. The hotel will offer approximately 2,100 square feet of versatile meeting and event space, an intimate lobby bar; and a 1,650 square foot state-of-the-art fitness center and spa located on the 39th floor. Expanding on the above, high-profile chef Jason Atherton's restaurant, now called the Clocktower, will open May 17. The hotel is also ready to host events, with a promotional brochure [warning: PDF!] available to download on the website.
