New York's Modular Micro Unit Building Is Fully Stacked

New, 9 comments

Well that was fast. On May 20, the first of 66 prefabricated modules was hoisted into place at 335 East 27th Street, and just over a month later, the micro unit building has topped out. The development is the first ever city-backed apartment building of microdwellings, with all 55 studios measuring 360 square feet or less. The mods were created in a factory at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and now that they are all stacked in place, the building will receive its facade and masonry work.

Each module is structurally independent, and most finishes were installed in the factory, so not much interior work remains at the site. Completion is set for fall. Monadnock Development is developing the building, and nARCHITECTS designed it.

Twenty-two of the units will be set aside as affordable for formerly homeless Veterans and low-and middle-income families, while the rest will be market rate, renting for about $2,000 to $3,000 a month.
