Beloved 190 Bowery Is Getting (Partially) Covered Up

Since developer/landlord/Four Seasons villain Aby Rosen is, in fact, holding onto 190 Bowery, the beloved landmark is going to start to see some changes. Per RFR Realty reps, interior work already started, and now scaffolding is going up around the building, meaning that it will be at least partially covered up for the first time since 2007, according to Bowery Boogie. But don't worry—the scaffolding does not mean that the exterior will be scrubbed clean. The plans approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in May call for keeping the graffiti.

Most of the work will take place inside, where Rosen is turning the former single-family mansion and art studio into high-end retail condos. The exterior will have entrances restored to their original 1898 state, and all of the windows will be replaced. The LPC called it "a wonderful and gentle renovation." Let's hope Rosen plans the same light touch inside, where the original copper elevator cage, the bank's vault, carved moldings and woodwork, stained glass windows, and an ornate spiral staircase still exist.
