The Brooklyn Navy Yard Developlement Corp. has announced that Marvel Architects will be designing a giant food court and "collaboration hub" (in the words of Crain's) that will serve as a gateway to the Navy Yard, previously inaccessible to the public. The 60,000-square-foot food court will go at the base of BLDG 77, which is getting a $140 million renovation set to be completed in late 2016. The interior will be flanked by retail spaces, the only ones in the Navy Yard. "Fifteen years ago the yard was surrounded by razor wire," said Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. president David Ehrenberg. "We have been trying, in a controlled way, to invite the public in."
