The "dead carcass" of a building at 255 East Houston Street has sat vacant for more than five years, after demolition of an adjacent building destabilized it, and it looks like it's finally going to see a new lifebut the future may not be bright. New York YIMBY spotted recently filed plans for a 10-story, 53-unit apartment building, and they list the owner as Samy Mahfar, a notorious landlord who has a reputation for allowing unsafe construction and harassing rent-stabilized tenants (at least the latter won't be a problem here, as the building is empty).
Stephen B Jacobs Group is the architect of record, and the ground floor will have a 4,600-square-foot community facility. Way back way, the previous owner tried to get a commercial zoning overlay for the site to bring in a retail tenant on the ground floor, but the community board wasn't having it.
