Landmarked Lower East Side Nursing Home Changes Hands

New, 1 comment

It's been a while since we heard anything about the former Bialystoker Nursing Home on East Broadway in the Lower East Side, but the LoDown reports that the (kind of) newly minted landmark has changed hands for nearly $18 million. Once upon a time a condo conversion was rumored for the site, and now that it has sold, that seems a tad more likely. The new owner is hiding behind an LLC, so any development plans that may be in the works are still a mystery.

The 1921 building went through a lengthy landmarking campaign that brought out dozens of supporters with heartwarming stories of what the Jewish institution meant for so many New Yorkers. Ultimately, it received the designation in 2013, which means that any development plans cannot raze the structure, but the LoDown points out that the "parcels on either side of it are primed for new development."
