Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens is on its way to being preserved as open space. The Parks Department has made the first moves towards officially mapping the park, located between 31st Drive and Broadway in Astoria, DNAinfo reported.
Part of the plan would also add a parcel of land near the entrance on Broadway, currently owned by Costco. Costco, in return, would get development rights elsewhere. Queens Community Board 1 approved the Parks Department's land use application on Tuesday. The next steps are approval from the borough president and the City Planning Commission, the report said.
In addition to outdoor art, the park offers kayaking, yoga classes, film festivals, and more – all for free. It welcomes 150,000 visitors a year.
