If you were expecting people to visit you from out of town this weekend, they might not be able to get here because of the snow. But if they did, they'd have found plenty of hotels to stay in, as Manhattan, Lower Manhattan in particular, is in the midst of a massive hotel boom. Over 18,000 rooms have been added since 2010, the New York Post reported. There are at least another 36,000 rooms coming and 12,600 of those are already under construction.
In Lower Manhattan alone, 6,300 rooms have been added since 2010, a 28 percent increase, the report said. There are 26 new hotels planned or under construction, representing 10,700 more rooms.
Some of the new hotels downtown are the 50-story Holiday Inn Manhattan-Financial District at 99 Washington Street, which opened in 2014 and is the tallest Holiday Inn in the world. There are 492 rooms there.
There are a couple of new hotels on the Lower East Side. That includes the 50-room Orchard Street Hotel at 163 Orchard Street and the 293-room Hotel Indigo at 171 Ludlow Street.
The 140-suite AKA Wall Street at 84 William Street will open downtown later this year and be an extended-stay property, as will the unnamed 106-suite development at 17 John Street.
Other new hotels downtown include the coming 36-room Riff Hotel Downtown at 102 Greenwich Street, the 287-room The Beekman at 5 Beekman Street, the 185-room Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown at 27 Barclay Street.
A bit uptown, the 122-room Paul Hotel opened at 32 West 29th Street in NoMad.
Another hotel is coming to the NoMad/Midtown South area. It doesn't have a publicized name, but a 40-story, 164-room (or suite) Rafael Viñoly-designed development from Flag Luxury Properties was filed at 1185 Broadway on Thursday, YIMBY reported.
Bowery Boogie is reporting a rumor that Ace Hotel is planning a sub-brand project at 229 Bowery, next to the landmarked Bowery Mission headquarters.
The hotel boom isn't limited to Manhattan. The Post story cites the 194-room 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge at Brooklyn Bridge Park and DNAinfo is reporting that a 76-room boutique hotel called Gowanus Inn & Yard is planned at 645-651 Union Street in Gowanus. The former is expected to open this summer. The latter is still in the planning stage.
