On Tuesday, developer SL Green will host a groundbreaking ceremony for One Vanderbilt, which will eventually become the second tallest building in the city. In anticipation of the milestone office project next to Grand Central Terminal, the developer has now released a time-lapse video of the demolition work that took place at the site this past year to make way for the 1,401-foot tower.
The Kohn Pederson Fox-designed building will rise 58 stories and span 1.6 million square feet when it is complete. Located on an entire city block bounded by Vanderbilt and Madison Avenues and 42nd and 43rd Streets, the demolition of the commercial buildings that stood there got underway at the end of last year. And by August, excavation work was underway at the site.
The air rights surrounding the structure became the subject of a lawsuit filed by the owner of Grand Central Terminal, but that too was settled in August allowing the project to move forward.
The project was further bolstered at the end of last month when SL Green secured a $1.5 billion construction loan on the behemoth. The structure itself won’t go vertical until the second quarter of 2017, and construction on the project is expected to wrap up sometime in 2020. The development will also bring $220 million in public transit upgrades to the area.
But for now, check out a video of the site being prepared for the eventual supertall.
