The first render has been unveiled for the massive Nordstrom store that will open along Broadway, and will partly be located at the base of the Central Park Tower. The Seattle Times was the first to break the story (h/t YIMBY). The store will span 363,000 square feet and will be spread out over four properties on Broadway between West 57th Street and West 58th Street.
"We're building in the context of the world's greatest stores in the best retail city in the world and our ambition is to create an entire experience that reflects the best of what we have to offer," Pete Nordstrom, the co-president, Nordstrom, Inc, said in a press release. "We think the modern exterior glass design combined with the historical renovations honor both the past and future of Manhattan. We look forward to the day when we can open our doors and welcome customers."
The glass facade he's referring to will be installed at the base of the Central Park Tower. Designed by James Carpenter Design Associates (JCDA), this section of the store features seven floors of retail, two of them below ground. The tower portion of the store will also incorporate the landmarked facade of 1780 Broadway. The Landmarks Commission had earlier approved razing part of the building, also known as the BF Goodrich Building, to make room for the Extell-developed Central Park Tower.
The other three properties where the Nordstrom store will be located are 5 Columbus Circle, 1776 Broadway, and 3 Columbus Circle. The last one will be the Nordstrom Men's Store and will encompass about 43,000 square feet of retail spread out on three levels. The interiors of Central Park Tower, 5 Columbus Circle and 1776 Broadway will all be connected to give the feeling of a unified shopping space.
The space at 5 Columbus Circle features 8,000 square feet of street level retail, whereas 1776 Broadway has about 20,000 square feet of retail spread out over four floors.
The store is expected to open in 2019, according to the press release.
