Enormous Single-Family Home May Be Coming to Jane Street

New, 9 comments

Big new developments are potentially coming to both ends of Jane Street: A tipster passed along a DOB application for an 80-foot, five-story building that could be rising at 85 Jane Street between Greenwich and Washington streets, replacing a two-story commercial building. That would join a six-story residential building at 11 Jane Street between Eighth and Greenwich avenues that would have two townhouses along with several apartments, which is being developed by Minskoff Equities (h/t The Real Deal).

The land at 85 Jane is something of a mystery: It's currently home to a smaller, two-story building, and was purchased by an anonymous corporation, named 85 Jane Realty LLC, in 2012 for a whopping $20 million, according to city records. (The filing address leads to a firm in Georgia called Triad Professional Services.) The application on file with the DOB calls for a five-story, single-family home, which would have an enclosed garage, office and studio space, a roof deck, and an elevator. Steven Harris Architects, which has some experience with building out West Village townhouses, is listed as the architect of record. If it comes to fruition, that'd be one heck of a mansion—certainly larger than many of the single-family townhouses currently in the neighborhood.

At the other end of Jane, meanwhile, plans have been filed to replace a parking garage with a six-story building that would hold two townhouses, several apartments, a fitness center, and other amenities. But according to TRD, because the building is part of the Greenwich Village Historic District, any plans for a new structure would need to be approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission before they could move forward.
