Far Rockaway Will Get $91M For Much-Needed Improvements

Far Rockaway is set to get a major makeover —a $91 million makeover at that. Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement in his State of the City speech Thursday night. DNAinfo was the first to report on the development which will see the renovation of a recreational center, neighborhood streets, and a transportation hub.

Specific projects outlined in this new investment include upgrading the Sorrentino Recreation Center, making improvements to the LIRR and A Train stations, redesigning some of the neighborhood streets and adding lighting, and developing the underused Thriftway Shopping Center.

A Dunkin Donuts opened there in August last year, which was the first new store to open there in 30 years, according to DNAinfo. De Blasio is hoping to bring retail and mixed-income housing to this space as well. He also spoke about creating a new state-of-the-art library in the neighborhood.
