Judge: SRO’s Can’t Rent For Fewer Than 30 Days

New, 2 comments

Ruling comes from a case involving the Imperial Court Hotel on the UWS

After the owner of the Imperial Court Hotel, an SRO on West 79th Street near Riverside Drive, tried to open it up to short-term Airbnb stays, a Manhattan judge ruled that SROs cannot rent for periods shorter than 30 days, the New York Daily News reported. The hotel’s lawyer told the New York Post the decision hurts tourists and those who can’t afford a month at a time. A tenant advocate, however, said the decision protects long-term residents, who can become rent-stabilized after a continual six-month occupancy or by requesting a lease. The hotel plans to appeal.
