A utilitarian icon in Soho has less than a month to live. The BP gas station at the corner of East Houston and Lafayette streets will close on April 14, Bowery Boogie reports. Its closure will pave the way for an 80,000-square-foot COOKFOX-designed office building to rise in its place. The Puck Fair bar just south of the gas station will close at the end of March, with a goodbye celebration this Friday.
Bowery Boogie notes that the site has been in continuous use as a gas station since the 1930s, having been the Gaseteria Amoco station from 1976 to 2003. It was the southern end of a neighborhood known as "Gasoline Alley." Still need your fix come April 15, head to Gasoline Alley Coffee at 325 Lafayette Street.
