A stretch of boardwalk and beach between Beach 108th and Beach 126th streets in Rockaway will be closed for Memorial Day weekend owing to a delayed construction schedule. The stretch of Rockaway Beach boardwalk won't be opening until July, biting into its most high-trafficked season. The ongoing work on the boardwalk is to reconstruct parts of it destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
DNAinfo says the delayed schedule was caused by new crane regulations that the city enacted following February's deadly collapse in Tribeca. High winds caused 24 days of halted work throughout February, March, and April on the reconstruction project.
Another stretch of boardwalk from Beach 60th to Beach 73rd will also likely be missing its opening date because of the nesting schedule of the Piping Plover, a really cute-looking endangered bird that nests on the beaches.
