First Look at Rafael Viñoly's 55-Story Luxe Nomad Condo

A troubled Nomad development site will sprout this 700-foot tower

It's been nearly a year since co-developers Victor Group and Lendlease filed plans for a new condo tower on the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 30th Street, and now that foundation work is about to begin at the site, new details about the tower are seeping out of the cracks.

The condo at 281 Fifth Avenue will be designed by Rafael Viñoly, who was tapped after the three-building parcel sold for a record-breaking price to the developers in June 2014. At 55 stories and 700 feet, 281 Fifth will stand just a bump taller than has been reported. Because new developments designed by famous architects can be nothing but luxury condos, this building will hold 130 of them. It will also have ground-floor retail.

Early renderings for the building first made the rounds last year, but looking at the first official rendering (↑), it appears that things have changed. The boxy tower still resembles Viñoly's other NYC residential building, 432 Park Avenue.

Work is expected to begin at the site in April, and wrap in the fall of 2018.
