Lower Manhattan is filled with beautiful architecture, culture, and fascinating history that is constantly building upon itself. But as the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold. A recent analysis, completed by RentHop, compiled 311 complaints in neighborhoods like East Village, Chinatown, West Village, Lower East Side, Battery Park City, and Soho/Tribeca/Civic Center/Little Italy. Garbage and rodent sighting complaints were ranked on a complaint per square mile basis while noise was ranked according to complaints per 1,000 residents. Garbage complaints were weighted heaviest and noise complaints the least, in terms of factoring them in overall.
Good news first: Battery Park City-Lower Manhattan ranked lowest in complaints overall, with the lowest number of garbage and rodent gripes and the second lowest amount of noise complaints (Lower East Side had the lowest). Chinatown also ranked pretty low in noise complaints, having only 47.8 per 1000 residents putting them in place for the third lowest.
The East Village was the top offender in all three categories, ranking number one in each type of complaint and averaging 680 garbage complaints/square mile, 573/square mile for rodents, and 75 complaints/1000 residents. Chinatown was the second worst for garbage with Lower East Side and West Village following in third and fourth respectively. Soho and correlating areas had the second highest amount of rodent and noise calls.
