Work is now underway on a 14-story affordable housing building in Chelsea, which is being partly funded by work on the supertalls at 111 West 57th Street and 1 Park Lane. In exchange for more development rights, JDS Development Group & Property Markets Group along with development Witkoff (for their project at 1 Park Lane) paid the city $28 million last summer. That money is now being used to subsidize the construction of the project at 211 West 28th Street. Yimby stopped by the construction site recently to check on the project.
Developer Arker Companies has demolished most of the former six-story building at the site, and intends to build a 14-story building with 37 apartments instead. The Aufgang Architects designed-building will span 24,563 square feet when complete, and will likely be rented to Friends House, which provides services to AIDS patients.
The structure at the site in Chelsea has currently been reduced to a two-story structure to allow for its extension to 14 stories.
