Which will add 1.2 million square feet of space to the existing building

The state has selected three companies to compete for a proposal to expand the Jacob K. Javits Center, The Real Deal reports. The over $1 billion expansion, will see the addition of 1.2 million square feet of space, and a roof terrace for outdoor events.

The three teams selected are the Gilbane Building Company, a consortium led by Skanska that includes architecture firm HOK and engineering firm STV, and a third team that includes Lend Lease and Turner Construction.

Back in April, the Empire State Development Corporation had issued a request for qualifications — to solicit teams that would build the project with a fixed cost and construction timeline. This is the first time the ESD has been able to use this type of methodology after the state authorized it to do so in April, according to TRD.

The finalists were chosen from those submissions and now have to present their designs by October 31 this year. Following that, a winner will be selected early next year.
