While the Upper East Side is seemingly timeless, it’s experiencing a spate of megamansion conversions and the rise of many entirely new buildings. Add to that list a new 15-story condo building, which YIMBY reports is planned for 27 East 79th Street. The 5,800-square-foot lot is currently occupied by a postmodern townhouse, which sold for $28 million earlier this year.
Thomas O’Hara’s HTO Architects are set to design the 232-foot-tall building which will contain eight apartments. According to YIMBY, the ground floor of the building will contain 1,425 square feet of commercial space, and duplexes will occupy the second and third floors as well as seventh through 12th floors. Additionally, the building will be crowned with an triplex.
The rise of a new building will turn this particular stretch of East 79th Street—close to Central Park, and generally a pretty quiet block—into a veritable construction zone. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent the last last year purchasing several units within 19 East 79th Street, which sits next to his equally opulent residence at no. 17 on that block.
