Rockaway Boardwalk Fully Completed in Time for July 4th Weekend

The entire 5.5-mile stretch is finally open to the public for the first time since Hurricane Sandy

All 5.5 miles of the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach is open to the public for the first time since Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012, causing massive damage to the neighborhood as a whole.

The final stretch of the boardwalk between Beach 117th Street and Beach 126th Street got its finishing touches yesterday, just in time for the 4th of July weekend, reports WNYC. It was supposed to debut during Memorial Day weekend, but after high winds resulted in a 24-day construction delay in February, March, and April, city officials were forced to push back the opening date.

The new boardwalk is sporting a new look these days, ditching the old wooden planks of its former self for new concrete, making it much more resilient against future storms. The area also received protective dunes that serves as a barrier against wind and wave damage, adding further reinforcement to the vulnerable site.
