Downtown Jamaica’s Long Island Railroad Station will receive a $65 million makeover that will transform the dated infrastructure into a modern hub, reports DNAinfo.
Governor Cuomo recently announced the multi-million dollar project, saying that the revamp will welcome new tracks that allow for increased service between Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica Station as well as new platforms, designed in part by New York City-based artist James Little.
According to the MTA, the upgraded platforms will feature heated waiting areas enclosed in colorful glass panels, Wi-Fi, and USB charging stations.
In Long Island, the Hicksville LIRR station is getting an even bigger revamp. The station will receive $121 million towards its modernization efforts.
"Revamping these two heavily trafficked transportation hubs will provide better, faster, and more reliable train service for Long Island Rail Road riders," said Governor Cuomo in a press statement. Both station renovations are being paid for through the MTA’s $27 Billion Capital Program.
The Jamaica station should be complete by the end of 2019.
