Fort Greene’s new 35-story mixed-use tower at 300 Ashland Place is getting a Whole Foods—or rather, a 365 by Whole Foods Market, which is the brand’s new, more budget-friendly option.
Slated to open in early 2018, the East Coast’s first 365 will feature “the same standards as Whole Foods Market,” according to a release, with “high quality products at a great value.” (It is emphatically not a cheaper version of Whole Foods, apparently—the Times explains it’s more of a Gap/Old Navy situation.)
The tower, developed by Two Trees Management, features 379 rental units, with 76 of those priced below market-rate for qualified residents. Two Trees head Jed Walentas told the Wall Street Journal that part of why the building has such a high base was to potentially accommodate a Whole Foods. “All of the great space in this project is about the public and about making this a better district,” he said.
“We believe our fresh new format will be a perfect fit for the Brooklyn community,” Jeff Turnas, president of 365 by Whole Foods Market said in a release. So far, the grocer has opened 365s in Los Angeles, Bellevue Washington, and Lake Oswego, Oregon. The Brooklyn store will be the second Whole Foods-branded store in the borough, joining the chain’s Gowanus market.
In addition to the 365, the base will house a dance studio, a new Brooklyn Public Library branch, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, a four-screen BAM theater. Also, an Apple store. (Contain your surprise.) And just think — with all the money you save, you might even be able to rent an apartment there!
