Subway and bus fare will remain $2.75 following MTA vote

Both the monthly and weekly MetroCards will however see increases

Going against most predictions, the MTA decided not to increase the base fare for a single subway or bus ride from $2.75 to $3, DNAinfo first reported. That decision did not however carry over into the weekly and monthly MetroCards, which will both see increases when the fare hike goes into effect on March 19 this year.

Before the agency voted on the matter earlier today, the MTA was debating between two options—a $3 base fare, which in turn would have increased the bonus amount when purchasing a MetroCard with $6 or more, or no increase on the base fare with a lower bonus amount. The MTA decided to go with the latter, with DNAinfo reporting that only one board member voted against this proposal.

Under the new hike, the monthly MetroCard will go up from the current $116.50 to $121 and a weekly pass will go up from $31 to $32. In addition, the 7-Day Express Bus Plus MetroCard will see an increase from $57.25 to $59.50. The price to purchase a new card however is staying the same at $1.

New Yorkers who spoke at the board meeting on Wednesday continued to emphasize how much a base increase would financially burden them, according to DNAinfo, and the MTA board members were in agreement.

Stay tuned for more details on the fare hike as they continue to emerge over the course of the day.
