Inside the luxury digs that the NYPD's horses call home

How are New York’s foaliest doing in their new home?

It’s been two years since the NYPD’s Mounted Unit moved from Pier 76 in Hell’s Kitchen to Mercedes House, the ziggurat luxury rental on West 53rd Street. (That’s right, even New York City’s horses post up in luxury dwellings these days.)

The new stables are located on the ground floor of the luxury rental, next door to the Mercedes dealership that gives the building its name. When the building was still a mere idea, members of the community board persuaded Jed Walentas of Two Trees Management to include the horses' new home there which is beneficial because of its proximity to Times Square.

The stables, which cost $30 million to build, are home to 27 stalls, in addition to two hot water horse showers, automatic water feeders, and an indoor exercise ring.

“When you see the officers cleaning and tacking their horses and leaving for patrol, it’s a unique experience considering that this does not happen anywhere else in the city,” Commanding Officer Barry Gelbman tells Curbed.

So how are New York’s foaliest doing in their new home? Watch the video above to find out.
