The jazz legend once occupied a first-floor apartment in this brownstone

A lovely Upper West Side townhouse that was once home to jazz legend Billie Holiday officially has a new owner—and they got the home for … a song. (Get it?!?) The house at 26 West 87th Street originally hit the market back in 2015 with a $12.95 million price tag.

But as 6sqft notes, the home sat on the market for nearly a year without any action. Eventually, the sellers brought on Ryan Serhant of Nest Seekers International to sell the property; he did so earlier this year, with the final sale price being $9.475 million. (The Million Dollar Listing New York watchers out there may recognize the home from a recent episode, in which Ryan tries to sell this and a second property on West 87th Street.)

The house itself is plenty lovely: The 20-foot home has seven bedrooms (including a full-floor master suite), six bathrooms, the original foyer (with mahogany walls and an ornate chandelier), tons of outdoor space, a wine cellar, and more. A recent renovation “sought to preserve as many of the homes [sic] original finishes as possible while updating key components,” per the brokerbabble; the kitchen, floors, and mechanicals benefited from that.

As for Lady Day, she lived in an apartment in the Renaissance Revival house during the last years of her life, and according to a New York Press piece from 2004, she threw herself one final birthday party in the building in 1959. She died at Metropolitan Hospital in Harlem in July 1959.
