Get excited, New Yorkers: For the first time in history, Governors Island will remain open until the end of October, giving you the chance to experience the summer hot spot in the fall.
The Trust for Governors Island announced today that the island will now remain open for six months out of the year, wrapping up for the season on October 31st instead of its usual end of September closing date. The remote park also opened a month earlier this year, to the delight of outdoor enthusiasts across the city.
As part of its fall agenda, Governors Island will offer autumn-appropriate activities that are set to include a “Night of 1,000 Jack O’ Lanterns” with pumpkins carved by a myriad of local artists lining the island’s pathways, trick or treating, and “other arts and cultural programs.” There will also be the opportunity to experience fall foliage against the backdrop of the city’s skyline, and who wouldn’t want to enjoy that?
The news come as a pleasant surprise and gives us hope that Governors Island is getting closer toward becoming a destination that will eventually stay open all year long. “With the inclusion of October, visitors are now able to take advantage of one of the region’s most unique public spaces during the spring, summer, and fall,” said Trust for Governors Island president Michael Samuelian.
“This is a true milestone, and one that exemplifies how New York City is investing in our amazing parks to ensure it’s a city everyone can enjoy,” stated Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has expressed interest in the redevelopment and enhancement of Governors Island over the years.
