Rejoice! A museum dedicated to poster art is coming to NYC. The Wall Street Journal reports that the museum, known as Poster House, will open in Chelsea, towards the end of 2018.
At this time, details on the museum are limited. What we do know is that the folks behind the museum plan to renovate the retail space at 119 West 23rd Street to create a home for this new poster museum.
It will cost about $6 million to get the space ready for the museum, according to the WSJ. In all, the museum has about $15 million in funds that will tide it through 2019.
Despite that slightly worrying revelation, museum officials told the WSJ, that they will not charge patrons of the museum, but will instead ask visitors to make donations or contributions if they wish to. Not charging visitors “speaks to the democratic nature,” of poster art, is how a museum official described their logic to the WSJ.
When it opens, it will be part of tiny fraction of poster museums across the world. To drum up support for its opening next year, the museum is set to host a month-long pop-up at the Chelsea space starting September 20 this year.
