In less than a week, the city’s proposed rezoning of Inwood will enter into the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), the months-long city review process that will determine if the rezoning can move forward.
In the lead up to that, the city’s Economic Development Corporation and the City Council member representing Inwood, Ydanis Rodriguez are offering an update on the Inwood NYC Action Plan, that was first unveiled last summer.
The action plan outlines the changes the rezoning will bring to the neighborhood, and this latest update by the city offers an insight into the work that the city has already begun.
In regards to affordable housing, the city has financed the rehabilitation of three rent-stabilized buildings with a total of 83 apartments. In addition, the city has also financed a vacant city-owned building that has 15 apartments. Aside from that, new laws preventing tenant harassment and ensuring free legal services to tenants are now in place.
In terms of infrastructural improvements, the city is pushing forward with its $30 million investment to transform Highbridge Park, and its plan to redesign the neighborhood’s streets and intersections to improve the flow of traffic, and make it safer for cyclists, and pedestrians. The city has also provided several grants to bolster local businesses and cultural institutions.
The city is hopeful that the rezoning will create 1,300 new permanently affordable apartments, set height limits for new buildings, and require that building owners who build on the waterfront should also create publicly-accessible waterfront space.
Representatives of the EDC and Council member Rogriguez presented all of this information to over a 100 Inwood residents at a Spanish-language resource fair over the weekend. This will now be the fifth neighborhood rezoning the de Blasio administration has undertaken, according to City Limits along with the ones in Midtown East, Downtown Far Rockaway, East New York, and East Harlem. The ULURP for Inwood will begin on January 16.
